A first-of-its-kind global registry of senior nurses is being created to address the growing demand for nursing expertise worldwide and to “amplify the voice” of nursing in policymaking.
The programme is being launched by the International Council of Nurses and credentialing body CGFNS International, which supports migrating nurses and other health professionals.
“This exciting scheme will guarantee that we have recognised experts who will advocate most effectively and powerfully for nursing and health improvements”
It will see the development of a cadre of “certified global nurse consultants” who will have gone through a “rigorous” accreditation process to validate their body of knowledge and experience.
The bank of nurses will be made available to governments, health institutions and other organisations seeking the nursing perspective on matters such as clinical practice, public health messaging, nurse education and workforce.
It comes as nurses have been at the forefront of the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic and are now leading the mass vaccination programme.
ICN president Annette Kennedy (pictured top) said: “Nurses must have a seat at the policy table, and this exciting scheme will guarantee that we have recognised experts who will advocate most effectively and powerfully for nursing and health improvements.
“Certified global nurse consultants will amplify the voice of nurses in policymaking, improve the response to current health challenges nationally and globally, and provide advice to shape the future of healthcare.”
Franklin A. Shaffer, president and chief executive of CGFNS International, added: “As the largest and most trusted health profession, nurses are being called to provide solutions for the world’s most pressing public health needs.
“By certifying the breadth and depth of their experience, the CGNC programme will put expert nurses at the forefront of efforts addressing global issues at a time when they are needed most.”
