Public Health England has issued guidance on mouthcare for seriously ill patients during the coronavirus pandemic
If oral hygiene is neglected the mouth becomes dry and sore, so supporting the mouthcare of seriously ill patients is an important nursing role. In addition to patient comfort it can help prevent additional infection and reduce patients’ risk of developing viral pneumonia.
Public Health England has issued guidance on providing mouthcare for hospitalised adults and children with known or suspected Covid-19. The guidance focuses on:
- Mouthcare for non-ventilated patients
- Mouthcare for ventilated patients
- End-of-life care
- Step-down care after ventilation.
