The chief nursing officer for England has issued a plea to nurses and midwives to support colleagues facing personal and financial crises by taking on a 10k challenge of their choosing.
Ruth May has urged staff to sign up to this year’s ’10k for Nurses and Midwives’ campaign, which is run by charity Cavell Nurses’ Trust in partnership with online nursing community We Nurses.
“Please join hundreds of nurses, midwives and many others by raising funds for a very worthy cause”
The initiative, which takes place throughout October, encourages participants to complete a self-styled 10k challenge while pledging to raise at least £100 for the Cavell Nurses’ Trust.
Fundraisers may choose to walk 10,000 steps; run, hike or swim 10 kilometres; sky-dive from 10,000ft; or something more unusual such as singing or dancing for 10,000 seconds.
Money raised supports the charity’s work helping UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who are facing hardship.
Those behind the project said the event this year came at an “incredibly crucial time” due to record numbers of people seeking the charity’s services in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
CNO Ms May said she would “very much encourage” staff to support the fundraiser, especially during International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
“Please join hundreds of nurses, midwives and many others by taking on your own ‘10k’ themed challenge and raising funds for a very worthy cause,” she said.
“Money raised will come at an incredibly crucial time”
Those behind the campaign, which is in its fourth year, said it was on track to raise a record amount of money thanks to more fundraisers taking part than ever before. So far, more than 500 people have signed up for 2020.
John Harrison, fundraising manager at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, said: “This year has been incredibly challenging in particular for nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants.
“Money raised through 10k For Nurses & Midwives will come at an incredibly crucial time with Cavell Nurses’ Trust facing record levels of applications for help this year.”
He added that funds would also “help meet this increased need right now, and also help to build the foundation for long-term support for these professions in the future”.
There is still time to sign up for this year’s challenge, which is supported by Alexandra Workwear, Health Service Discounts, L&R, Thornbury, Vivup and Network Recruitment Wales.
